Deepfake and other synthetic media are not new. What is different this time is the ease, efficiency, effectiveness and scale of creating and distributing fake media. With just a few clicks, anyone can create incredibly realistic images, videos, and even audio that blur the line between fact and fiction.

Just recently, a string of synthetic media dominated the web. From the fake images of former President Trump tussling with the police to a fake song using cloned voices of Drake and The Weeknd, synthetic media creators keep pushing the bar on the imaginable.

But what happens when fake becomes reality? Or when the comic becomes a tragedy upending society, like in the recent case of a deepfake photo of an explosion near the Pentagon? By the way, that image cost the stock market some $500 billion! Let’s push it further, what happens if a mob attack occurs simply because someone has created a fake video targeting religious or gender sentiments?

Let’s wade through the murky waters of artificial intelligence (AI) and its profound impact on truth. In this age of rapid technological advancements, we find ourselves grappling with an ever-growing challenge: the rise of synthetic media and its role in reshaping our understanding of reality. The question on the minds of many is, “What is true?”
